Created specifically for our exhibition, Women in Print: 150 Years of Liberty Textiles, we are excited to unveil our exclusive collection of textile accessories by celebrated trailblazer designer Althea McNish. The range draws inspiration from iconic designs within the Liberty London archive and features cotton and silk scrunchies, pouches, gowns, hankies and scarves.
Althea McNish was one of the first designers of African-Caribbean descent to achieve international recognition, transforming post-war fashion and textiles with her bold use of colour, movement, and expressive lines. From the 1950s onwards, her vibrant designs for furnishing and fashion fabrics drew on the tropical flora and fauna of her native Trinidad and a “tropicalised” take on the British landscape, ranging from natural imagery to lively abstract patterns bursting with energy and joy.
Our latest arrivals include silk hankies and a suite of patterned pouches in mini, large, and curved silhouettes, perfect for adding a bold, joyful touch to your wardrobe or home. For those visiting us in person, we are also exclusively offering our stunning large gowns, currently available only at the Gallery shop.
The collection arrives alongside our current exhibition, Women in Print: 150 Years of Liberty Textiles, which celebrates the evolving influence and achievements of women in the textile industry over the last century and a half. McNish’s work remains a testament to the power of color and vitality in design, bridging the gap between mid-century heritage and contemporary style.
