Design for Trellis Wallpaper A3 Print by William Morris

This A3 print features Trellis, the first wallpaper designed by William Morris and one of the earliest patterns associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.

Created in 1862, the design was inspired by the rose trellises in the garden of Red House, the home Morris shared with his wife Jane. Combining a simple diamond trellis structure with climbing roses, the pattern demonstrates Morris's early interest in translating forms from nature into decorative surface design. The overlapping foliage and flowers create a sense of depth while retaining the flat, repeating quality that became a hallmark of his work.

The design was developed in collaboration with architect Philip Webb, who contributed the birds woven throughout the composition. Their inclusion adds movement and character to the pattern and reflects the close creative partnership between Morris and Webb during this formative period.
