Earring Design

Inspired by the visionary artistry of May Morris, this exclusive collection of earrings by heritage embroiderers Hand & Lock draws directly from William Morris Gallery’s archive of original May Morris embroidery designs.

May Morris was a force of her own: an influential embroidery designer, jeweller, and socialist. A pioneer of “Art needlework,” May’s style embraced freehand stitching and delicate silk shading, a stark and expressive contrast to the rigid wool work of her time.

Our exclusive earring designs bring May’s genius to life. The earrings, inspired by one of her most celebrated works, feature fantastical flowers blooming in vibrant, intricate detail. Each piece is a testament to her mastery, with thread work in deep teal, shimmering gold beads, purple and pink bullions, and an intricately embellished border.

More than just jewellery, this is wearable art, celebrating a revolutionary female artist and supporting the legacy of traditional craftsmanship.

The 'Vine' hanging c. 1916 was originally embroidered by May Morris & others on a golden shade of linen using coloured silks. Vibrantly coloured, chevron striped tulips can be found at the bottom of the design. Using a gradient of threads, gold bullion and beaded fringing in bugle & pearl beads, we have created this playful pair of earrings that feel both antique & contemporary all at once.
