William Morris Gallery is delighted to unveil the exclusive May Morris Embroidery Kit, crafted by renowned heritage makers Hand & Lock.
Inspired by exquisite archive embroidery designs by May Morris, William Morris’s youngest daughter and a trailblazing artisan, this kit offers a unique chance to connect with history through your own creative hands.
May Morris was not only a gifted embroidery designer and jeweller but also a passionate socialist and editor. Known for her free-form Art needlework style—featuring delicate silk thread shading and expressive stitching—May’s work was a graceful departure from the
rigid wool needlepoint of her time.
The kit’s vibrant floral design draws on Rose Wreath, an original William Morris cushion cover embroidered by May around 1890 and showcased at the Arts and Crafts exhibition that year.
Each kit includes a pre-machine embroidered base to build upon with three-dimensional beading and threadwork, allowing you to bring the intricate florals to life. The generous fabric border offers versatile finishing options: frame your work as a stunning art piece,
transform it into a cushion with a contrasting printed back, or craft a charming tote bag.
Care & Information
This kit includes:
-
A 35x35cm printed satin base, featuring a trellis pattern and a central halo.
-
Design Guide: Inside the halo sits a pre-machine embroidered design. This acts as a guide for you to fill in, making the kit perfect for beginners and intermediate embroiderers alike.
-
Silk shading: You will receive a selection of stranded cotton threads in blues, pinks and greens. Much of the design is filled with silk shading and other thread work techniques such as chain stitch and french knots.
-
Contemporary goldwork: To give this kit a H&L spin, we have incorporated elements of contemporary goldwork such as loops and couching stretched bullion.
-
Tools: The kit also includes needles, thread and wax.
The design has been directly inspired by a piece titled 'Rose Wreath', embroidered by May Morris in 1890.
