Discover the stories, people and places at the heart of Earthly Paradise: Radical Living in the UK through this exclusive tea towel, specially commissioned by William Morris Gallery and created by Cambridge-based artist and historian Rory Hutton.
This striking design pays tribute to the Ladies of Llangollen, one of Britain's most celebrated examples of alternative domestic life. Featuring William Wordsworth's poem Sisters in Love, the artwork explores the enduring partnership between Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, who left Ireland together in 1778 to create a remarkable shared home in North Wales. Their home became a place of creativity, intellectual exchange and personal freedom, inspiring generations of writers, artists and visitors.
Inspired by an exhibition that explores 200 years of artists, activists and communities who challenged convention and imagined new ways of living, Hutton's design combines historical storytelling with traditional printmaking. Through carefully chosen imagery and the inclusion of Wordsworth's poem, the tea towel celebrates themes of companionship, home and self-determination that resonate throughout the exhibition.
Made and printed in the UK from high-quality cotton canvas, this beautifully produced tea towel brings a touch of radical history and artistic craftsmanship into the home. Both practical and decorative, it makes a thoughtful gift for lovers of social history, printmaking and design.
Every purchase directly supports William Morris Gallery, helping to fund vital conservation work, world-class exhibitions and community education programmes.
