New for 2025 and commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the William Morris Gallery, designer Ian McIntyre has created a special limited-edition coffee cup & saucer as part of the gallery's archive collection.
Specialising in utilitarian and functional forms and with a background in product design and applied art, McIntyre has drawn upon his mix of industrial design and craft skills to produce a contemporary reinterpretation of William Morris’s personal coffee cup and saucer, held within our archives.
The original Flemish cup on display at the Gallery was used by Morris at The Grange, (the Burne-Jone’s Fulham house), where he kept it especially for his own use when he dined there due to his objection over the small size of the Burne-Jone’s coffee cups.
The re-imagined cup & saucer has been crafted in McIntyre’s East London studio using traditional craft techniques, working in stoneware clay and slip alongside hand decoration. Each mark has been applied using McIntyre's fingertips to create the perfect blue dot to each cup & saucer.
Available in two designs this limited-edition set is part of our Archive Collection, where rare objects from the gallery's past are brought to life by modern British artisans. Every purchase not only adds a unique piece to your home but also directly supports the maker, preserves traditional UK craftsmanship, and helps fund the William Morris Gallery's vital work in conservation and exhibitions.
