Qom only began to weave carpets in the last century but have rapidly developed into an important centre and is distinguished for the fine quality of its designs. Qum attracts many pilgrims as it contains the shrine of Fatimeh Masumeh, the sister of the eight Imam Reza. The carpet industry was established in the 1930 by merchants from Kashan, it is entirely home based and the weavers work from charted designs supplied by the contractor. Colours are rich but restrained, like the case of this stylized tree of Life based on the Mughal flower design. The tree is represented finely, as if it was a rose bush where the flowers become the only contrasting feature in the centre that connects the rug with the border on red background. The rug is made of wool with silk highlights
